Park Se-Jin

Abstract
Introduction: In Korea, suicide rate has increased constantly, and divorce rate is still high. In such a social background, the purpose of this study was to examine the effect and the risk factors of marital status on the suicide rates among sex in Korea.

Method: We used the Census and Death Certificate data of 1995, 2000, and 2005 of the National Statistical Office(NSO). Merging the two different data for analysis, the age-standardized suicide rates of marital status were computed among sex. The poisson regression model was used to compute suicide relative risk(RR) and confidence intervals(CI). In-depth study analyzed the data of 2000 and 2005, and the change of marital status with suicide rates was compared in 1995, 2000, and 2005.

Result: For 10 years, percentage of suicide rate of the divorced, the widowed, and married persons increased in both males and females. In contrast, that of the single declined. Especially, suicide rate of the divorced increased rapidly. Relative risk of suicide for the divorced compared to the married was the highest, and then came the
single, and the widowed in order in both sex.

Conclusion: Marital status affects the suicide rate, especially divorce is a significant risk factor for suicide in both males and females.
